What Is Ratha Saptami & Why It Is Celebrated?

Ratha Saptami is the birthday of Surya or Sun God and is celebrated on the Saptami of the Shukla Paksha in the Vedic month of Magha (Feb-Mar). Also called as Surya Jayanthi or Magha Saptami, this is an auspicious day for worshiping Surya to show gratitude towards him for his blessings of life force, light, and energy. ‘Ratha’ means chariot, and ‘Saptami’ denotes the 7th Moon. Symbolically, this festival celebrates the event of Surya turning his Ratha towards the northern hemisphere.

Spiritual Significance Of Ratha Saptami

According to legend, Surya was born as the child of Rishi Kashyapa and Aditi. The day is celebrated as Surya Jayanti or Ratha Saptami. Worshiping the Sun God on this day brings the blessings of Surya in one’s life. In Vedic Astrology, Surya is the giver of longevity, good health, a strong mind, and success. Hence, Ratha Saptami is an ideal day to worship him and receive these blessings and also seek relief from the sins committed during one’s lifetime. Ratha Saptami also signifies the beginning of the harvesting season. The farmers harvest their crops on this day and express gratitude to the Sun God and nature for the produce and profits.

What To Do On Ratha Saptami?

People have an early bath, especially during sunrise on Ratha Saptami, as it is believed to bring relief from diseases, negativity and bestow sound health. After the bath, they offer “Arghyadan” to the Sun, by offering water to Surya, slowly using a small copper Kalash. Surya mantra is chanted during this ritual; some also chant the twelve names of Surya. After this, Ratha Saptami Pooja is performed when devotees light a ghee lamp, offer red flowers and perform Aarti to the Sun. Ratha Saptami Pooja to the Sun is believed to bestow a successful, long and healthy life. Women make Rangoli by drawing the image of Surya with the chariot at the doorstep to welcome the Sun God. Milk is boiled in their courtyard in a mud vessel facing the Sun, which is used to prepare the Prasad offering to Surya. Chanting Surya Mantra or Gayatri Mantra is also considered very auspicious on this day.
