How to Read The Outer Planets in Vedic Astrology

On March 18, 2022

The 9 planets have an important place in Vedic astrology as they rule human destiny. Of these, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are the outer planets. The Rig Vedas do not mention them, and they are not given great importance as a rule when analyzing a person’s natal chart. However, Western astrology does take these planets into account for making predictions.

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto can be responsible for major shifts in one’s life. They also trigger major events in the world. Many scholars opine that they represent the forces of the Tri Dev. Though their influence is indirect, their impact is beyond doubt.

In Vedic astrology, these 3 planets manifest through the 2 shadow planets or Chhaya Grahas, Rahu and Ketu. In Rahu’s materialism and Ketu’s spirituality, we can glimpse their effects. Rahu and Ketu are part of the Nava Grahas that are considered by astrologers when reading birth charts.

But the 3 outer planets in Vedic astrology are markedly different from the other planets. For instance, unlike the major planets, they are not the karaka nor any house. Also, they do not rule any Rashi or sign. But they are very powerful background players. They play a key role in major events on a large scale. Their effect can be felt even worldwide. Despite lacking lordship over houses, they exert a strong influence when they are conjunct with other planets or if they aspect some other planet. The major planets in astrology have certain flaws. But these 3 outliers lack flaws, as they are the manifestation of the supreme Trinity of Hinduism. They are believed to be perfect in themselves.

Major changes in our lives or changes related to our individuality cannot occur without the transit of at least one of these 3 planets. As they can effect major changes, we cannot ignore their importance in Vedic astrology.

How to Read The Outer Planets in Vedic Astrology

Uranus in Vedic Astrology

Uranus drives the creative energies that can cause major changes in a person. It represents invention and innovation. It is the planet of self-discovery and can reveal the true nature of our destiny.

Invention and innovation may happen at 2 levels - personal or global. One may discover one’s true nature through a personal invention and thereby come closer to understanding one’s true destiny. It can be liberating. It might be like an epiphany, sudden and shocking, that, too, when one is least prepared for change. But it can help one attain a higher level of self-knowledge. The change will be a major one and can alter the course of a person’s life. Its effect may be long-lasting. A major accident or injury is one example as it will change how a person is and what they feel.

Globally, Uranus can cause revolution and change. Political rebellions, changes in the form of government, etc., have happened in many countries, especially when Uranus has a hard aspect with Pluto. Natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanoes also happen with catastrophic consequences.

Uranus is turmoil works in unpredictable ways. If Uranus has an aspect with the Sun or Moon, the native’s relationship with their father or mother will be unpredictable and full of unusual turmoil. Due to its harsh effects, the relationship may be damaged beyond repair.

When placed with Venus, Uranus has a very damaging effect on love and marital relationships. Sudden issues and conflicts are likely, and they may destroy the relationship. But there is a positive side, too. Since Uranus brings us closer to our true destiny, the relationship will end only when the native is with the wrong partner. If the person is not destined to be their real partner till the end of life, the relationship will break up.

Despite the many disturbances, Uranus transit is believed to be the finest transit. It exposes your hidden nature and triggers major changes in your personality. This is a healthy development on the personal level. But people who cannot accept your true self will leave you during the Uranus transit.

Neptune in Vedic Astrology

Neptune is the second of the outer planets. It is the preserving force behind all things. As it constantly changes its form, it represents Maya or illusion. Neptune can make a person rise above illusion and see the reality of things.

Neptune is often hard to understand. It can be so confusing and elusive that we may fail to see its real nature. People who take things at face value and have a myopic approach to life will be trapped in this Maya and succumb to depression.

Neptune represents both deception and spirituality. It has different effects on different people. Only after studying the placement of other planets can we assess how Neptune will affect a person.

As the preserving force, Neptune represents Vishnu among the Trinity. It is the life-giving energy. This energy is not destroyed but transferred from one object to another. This lends Neptune its illusory nature. The things we associate with hope and happiness keep changing. Those who can accept these changes will have greater happiness and satisfaction in life. They will be preserved. Those who are fixed only on the form, ignoring the energy, will be destroyed. They fail to understand that change is essential to preservation.

As in western astrology, Neptune in Vedic astrology is also regarded as the unconditional one. It loves the formless. Hence, it is seen as the highest form of Venus. It changes forms and manifests itself in different entities at different times. During the Neptune transit, therefore, one may experience a shift in something that gave happiness or love. It can also be a change in career with better prospects. If you keep pace with it, you can gain on the spiritual level.

Neptune, though illusory, brings deeper understanding. Under Neptune’s influence, we are driven to seek the profound meaning of everything. It makes one spiritual. When in adverse conjunction with Jupiter, it can trigger an interest in occult practices or religious extremism. It has 2 extremes- spiritual and fanatic.

Neptune is hard to understand because it produces conflicting results in different people, even if it is in conjunction with the same planet. Some may benefit, while others may get depressed. When Neptune is in conjunction with Venus, some people may feel love and care for everyone. But others may develop lust for many people at the same time.

Pluto in Vedic Astrology

Pluto, the 3rd of the outlier planets in Vedic astrology, is believed to be the manifestation of Shiva. It is the destroyer as well as the planet that shows us reality. It shatters all illusions and ego and makes one confront the harsh reality. With Pluto, destruction paves the way for creation and the ultimate transformation. So Pluto is the planet of transformations, too.

Pluto destroys everything that the ego creates. Even when one is spiritual, one may still have ego, which gives one the right over all that one owns. Pluto removes this feeling of possession by striking at the things that satisfy one’s ego. It shakes us and destroys our ego completely. It compels us to see the harsh reality, where one does not own anything. When the transformation begins under the influence of Pluto, we may lose everything.

During Pluto’s transit, we need to let go of our ego if we wish to prosper. The more we cling to our ego, the more we will suffer.

Due to the challenges that Pluto brings, which involves the person losing everything, some may lose all hope and become suicidal. But all they have to do is to renounce their false pride and ego. When we let go of our attachment to material objects or other beings, creation begins again.

Pluto is a very destructive force. Soon after Pluto was discovered, weapons of mass destruction and nuclear arsenals came into being. Pluto also signifies control and dominance. If Pluto is present along with the Sun or the Moon in the natal chart, the native will have a troubled relationship with the father or mother. It is likely to be a very controlling one.

If Pluto is conjunct with Mars, the native will have a very tumultuous relationship with their siblings. There will be fights and arguments often, even for trivial things.
